What it does

Reconstructs your photo from thousands of stone tesserae, gold leaf, and aged fresco texture while preserving composition, pose, and likeness.

Byzantine Mosaic reinterprets your photo as if it were assembled by hand on an ancient palace wall — thousands of tiny stone tesserae, glass fragments, and gold leaf set into aged plaster. The original composition, pose, framing, and camera angle stay locked; only the material of the world changes. Every surface is rebuilt from physical craftsmanship: uneven tile placement, chipped edges, weathered stone, and the cracked-plaster texture of a Roman fresco. There is no clean digital tiling and no glossy CGI — the result reads as something physically constructed centuries ago, then photographed. Identity is preserved through silhouette, pose, facial proportions, hairstyle, and expression. The face is rendered with delicate stone-tile transitions and subtle fresco pigment blending rather than cartoon simplification, so the person in the result is still recognizable as the person in the source. The palette draws on authentic Byzantine and Roman fresco pigments — deep ultramarine, oxidized turquoise, aged gold, terracotta, dusty crimson, olive green, warm limestone, and faded sienna. Gold tesserae shimmer throughout the composition with the soft, sacred light of an ancient interior. The artwork fills the entire frame edge-to-edge. There are no museum frames, gallery walls, parchment margins, or presentation mockups — only the mosaic itself, so you feel immersed directly inside the Byzantine fresco world.

When to use it

  • Stylize a portrait into a sacred, monumental keepsake for a gift or wall print.
  • Rebuild a couple or family photo as a single timeless Byzantine mosaic panel.
  • Turn a travel photo into an ancient mural that reads as handcrafted craftsmanship, not a filter.
  • Build a profile picture with the gravitas of a museum-grade historical artwork.
  • Produce print-ready mosaic visuals for an art-themed product, cafe wall, or small gallery.
  • Create a regal, historical version of a portrait for an anniversary or memorial piece.

When not to use it

  • Strict photo retouching — Byzantine Mosaic intentionally reconstructs the entire surface.
  • Product photography where pixel-accurate detail and packaging text must be preserved.
  • Cartoon, anime, or flat illustration styles — the result is a textured stone mosaic, not vector tile art.
  • ID photos, badges, or any context that requires unaltered, photographic likeness.

How it works

You upload one source photo, and the model rebuilds the entire scene as a Byzantine mosaic fresco — assembled from thousands of stone tesserae, glass fragments, and gold leaf set into aged, cracked plaster. Composition, pose, framing, silhouette, proportions, and environment stay locked to the input; only the rendering changes, trading the photographic surface for handcrafted tile and mineral pigment. The environment is reinterpreted as a sacred Byzantine hall while keeping the same spatial layout. A single generation costs {credits} credits and returns a high-resolution PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Will the person in my photo still look like themselves?

Yes. Byzantine Mosaic preserves silhouette, pose, facial proportions, hairstyle, and expression, and renders the face with delicate stone-tile transitions and subtle fresco pigment blending. The result is unmistakably an ancient mosaic, but the person in it is still recognizable as the person in the source.

How is this different from a one-click mosaic filter?

A filter overlays a tile grid on top of a photo and keeps the photographic surface underneath. Byzantine Mosaic rebuilds the entire scene from individually placed tesserae with uneven edges, weathered stone, and cracked plaster, so every part of the image reads as physically handcrafted rather than processed by software.

Will the model add things that weren't in my photo?

It tries not to. The composition, framing, and environment structure are kept locked to the source. The model reinterprets the environment as a Byzantine hall and changes how the world is rendered — its tiles, palette, and lighting — but does not invent new people or background objects.

What kind of source photo works best?

Clear, well-lit photos with a defined subject and a background that has some shape and depth. Very dark, very blurry, or extremely cluttered source photos give the model less material to reconstruct as mosaic and fresco.

Does it work for full-body or wide shots, or only headshots?

Both. The output matches the model's 4:5 canvas, but the model handles tight portraits, half-body shots, full-body, and wider environmental shots equally — the tesserae density adapts to whatever's in frame.

Can I use the result commercially?

Yes — generated images on upsa are yours to use for personal and commercial purposes. We recommend you keep the consent and rights to the source photo as well, since the output preserves the identity in it.

How long are my photos stored?

Source uploads and generated results are stored for 48 and then automatically deleted from upsa's storage. We don't train any model on your photos.

AI results vary

Each generation uses a different random seed, so your result may not exactly match the example shown. If the first try doesn't fit what you had in mind, run it again — output differs noticeably between runs.
