- Produce calm, atmospheric imagery for invitations or greeting cards
- Reinterpret a landscape or travel photo as a misty ink painting
When not to use it

- Images that need to stay sharp, literal, and photographic
- Tiny or very low-resolution photos with no clear detail
- Documents, logos, or text that must remain perfectly legible
How it works
Upload a clear photo and choose Ink Wash. The whole frame is rebuilt as a traditional Chinese ink wash painting: your composition, pose, and identity are read as a fixed guide, then every surface is reconstructed with flowing ink diffusion, layered washes, and rice paper texture. The face is simplified with delicate, expressive brushwork so the likeness stays intact, and the palette settles into calm, near-monochrome tones. A single full-bleed image comes back in a few moments, with no frame or border.

Frequently asked questions
Will the person in my photo still look like themselves?
Yes. Ink Wash preserves the silhouette, pose, facial proportions, hairstyle, and expression, rendering the face with elegant brush simplification and subtle ink shading. The result is unmistakably a traditional ink painting, yet the person remains recognizable as the one in your source photo.
Is this Chinese or Japanese ink painting?
Ink Wash is built around the traditional Chinese ink wash painting tradition, with flowing ink diffusion, soft washes, and atmospheric empty space. It shares brush techniques with Japanese sumi-e but leans into the Chinese landscape and brushwork sensibility.
Will it keep the colors of my photo?
No — and that is intentional. Ink Wash works in a near-monochrome palette of black ink, charcoal, and warm grey wash, with only very restrained accents of jade, crimson, or indigo. If you need the original colors kept exactly, this style is not the right fit.
Does it work on landscapes, not just portraits?
Yes. Ink Wash suits landscapes, travel photos, and architecture as well as portraits. It reinterprets environments as misty mountains and poetic minimal scenery while preserving the original spatial layout.
Why does the result have so much empty space?
Authentic ink wash painting treats negative space as a core element — breathing room, atmospheric emptiness, and visible paper. Ink Wash follows this tradition deliberately, so the composition feels calm and uncrowded rather than filled edge to edge with detail.
Can I use the result commercially?
Yes — generated images on upsa are yours to use for personal and commercial purposes. We recommend you keep the consent and rights to the source photo as well, since the output preserves the identity in it.
How long are my photos stored?
Source uploads and generated results are stored for 48 and then automatically deleted from upsa's storage. We don't train any model on your photos.
AI results vary
Each generation uses a different random seed, so your result may not exactly match the example shown. If the first try doesn't fit what you had in mind, run it again — output differs noticeably between runs.
